Requirements

The first important consideration to check out when building a garden shed is the location where you wish to build the garden shed to be. It is important that you make sure that the ground is perfect for such kind of building. The area must be firm enough and must not be prone to keep water.

More than this, the place requirement must have a levelled floor for ease of construction. Once this location problem is settled, you can prepare other tools for the project such as power tools, hammer, lever, and the like. The same thing goes with construction materials.

Construction process

The best thing you must remember on how to build a garden shed is to start below. Use blocks to bring out the foundation of the structure. Following that, you can already start erecting the shed’s walls. However, while building the walls, make sure to leave certain spaces for the doors and windows.

Lastly, you must start installing the roof. Once done, you can start to decorate the storage shed. It could be installing good doors and windows or even painting the walls.

Indeed, a garden shed is not a tough task to complete, especially for DIY lovers just like you.

7 Point Check List…..

If you are new to building projects like sheds and other garden furniture and buildings then it is very important to have all the materials and equipment in place and an exact plan before you begin, this 7 point check list will help.

Here is a 7 point check list of questions to ask yourself which will help you build your shed right the first time round.

Q1 – Exactly what will you need your shed for?
Who is going to use the shed, will it be just yourself to store you garden equipment and tools or maybe you want a nice quite place to reflect on the day. Do you have children who will be using it to play and store garden toys etc…

So a good idea is to start by writing down a list and set rules for what your nice new shed will be used for.

Q2 – What size is your shed to be?
OK now you know who is going to be using your shed and what for now you can determine what size your shed needs to be and if it will require specific sections, shelf’s and storage places.

Q3 – Where will your shed be placed?
Well you probably already have a place in mind to build and keep your shed but here are a few things to consider.

How well will you be able to access the shed and will you have enough space to actually build the shed then work around it in the future.

You might think I’ll tuck the shed away in the corner so it does not mess up your nice landscaped garden or so it is protected under a tree for example, but access and space to work or enjoy your shed is a must.

Also make sure your chosen area for the shed is suitable with regard to the right size and type of ground for your build.

Q4 – Do you need your shed to be, waterproof, insulated, open or part open?
This is quite straight forward and will depend on how you want to use your shed and what you will be storing in the shed. However it is important to write this down so you can talk to the DIY store to make sure you get the best materials for the job.

Q5 – Is a building permit required?
Ensure you check out the local laws to find out if a building permit is required and for what type and size of structures. Many people overlook this point but it is vital that you check as you don’t want the nice new shed to have to be taken down.

Don’t worry though as most of the time you will not need a permit if you stay within a certain size but if you have worked out that you require a large size then you will have to submit you shed plans for approval.

Q6 –What is your budget?
You probably have a budget in mind and maybe you are building your shed yourself to save money or maybe you know it is going to be enjoyable and satisfactory and it is kind of a hobby project, or maybe both.

Whatever your motive you will still need to work out what all the materials will cost you so set a budget, shop around for good deals on materials, make a note of the price and exactly what you need. This will help with choosing the right shed plan design for your project.

Q7 – Now where will you get your shed plan?

Ok got all your important questions answered
-  The purpose and usage of your shed
-  Where it will be located
-  What material you will need
-  Your budget

Now where will you get your perfect shed plan, well you could sketch up a rough draft and take it to your local hardware or DIY store who will probably create a professional shed plan for you with detailed instructions and a list of materials needs, for a small fee. So you require a nice shed to safely store your outside belongings securely & suitably protected?

Maybe you have just started looking for a good shed plan or maybe you have been searching for a while but just can’t find your perfect shed. Then we have the answer.

Here are 10 easy and simple steps to build a storage shed & any other shed you want…..

Step 1 – Pick the Perfect Spot
It is obvious and vitally important that you first mark out and measure the exact area and surrounding space you want your new shed to be including enough room around the area to work in.

Step 2 – Outline Your Ideal Shed
Now you have the exact size of your desired shed it is time to sketch or draw a rough outline of what you want, this does not have to be a work of art…. Simply include the measurements and dimensions of your shed and any extra features you would like it to have.

Then take your drawing to your friendly DIY shop who will for a small fee or maybe complementary create a professional shed plan for you out of your drawing and instruction. They will also provide you with a list of the materials and supplies you will need to build the shed and most likely an outline of how to complete the various steps of the build process.

Step 3 – Get Your Plan & Resources
Ok now once you are happy with the plan and materials listed simply buy the things you need.

Tips:

  • Shop around for the best deals on materials or ask for a quote
  • Make sure you have all the necessary equipment and materials listed on hand before you commence building.

Step 4 – The Fun Stuff Begins
Now it gets good, you are equipped and prepared so the fun building part can begin.

Start by levelling the surface area and lay your desired the foundation, either concrete or wooden plank.

Step 5 – Wall to Wall Simple
Next stage is to build the walls, follow the instruction of your shed plan very closely and it will be a breeze, quick and easy.

Tips

  • layout all of your materials and equipment to one side with plenty of room to move about
  • You will find it much easier to build your sheds sides one at a time then slot them into place once ready.

Step 6 – Easy Method
Right you should have all walls in place and your shed is looking great, time to start building the roof. Start by building your trusses, make one then use it as a template to create the others.

Step 7 – Taking Shape
Your shed will now be shaping up to want you want as it time to build the end walls according to your plan, it will vary depending on what type of shed you are building.

Step 8 – Get the Finish you Desire
Your shed is looking great, almost finished and time to do the trim so make sure to do an excellent job here as the trim will gibe your shed the look and feel you desire.

Step 9 – Final Touches
OK last 2 steps, apply the shingles onto your roof & treat the wood with varnish, stains or paints to protect the surface form the elements and rotting. Paint or varnish the sides as well, what ever your preference. – Myself I like wooden decking so would create a decking area to sit & rest or work…

Step 10 – Finished
Well done, you are complete! All that’s left is to sit back relax and look at your perfect shed.

You now have a perfect and  professional shed , much better than once purchased form a shop, its unique to you and exactly how you want it, not to mention the money you have saved building it yourself – a shed you can be proud of.

Simple & Easy, Right…..

Well that’s because it is with the right plan, but even easier would be to have a selection of different shed plans and designs to choose from so you don’t have to sketch your own from scratch….
